What is CAD?
It is used in a variety of different industries. With CAD software, it’s possible to build an entire model in an imaginary space, letting you visualise properties like height, width, distance, material, or colour before the model is used for a particular application.
Getting Started
All you need to get started is a computer, and your chosen 3D design software. You can also use a graphics tablet for your design that can work with CAD software.

Where to Learn
CAD can be daunting but as a technology there are plenty of places to learn how to design with CAD.
Free Resources
YouTube has a wealth of jewellery designers using CAD to create their pieces, ranging from basic techniques and software tutorials to entire designs. Depending on the software you choose, there are also forums and communities to help you develop the skills to create your own pieces.
Other Resources
Courses in CAD are now very popular and are offered at local 1 on 1 level and at degree level too. The British Academy of Jewellers offers short courses on CAD design online for most software packages and there are plenty of other courses through individual trainers and companies.
