Silver clay is powdered silver mixed with an organic binder creating a mouldable clay. Once moulded and left to dry, the clay will need to be fired either in a kiln or with a hand torch. This will burn the organic binder off and the powdered silver will sinter together leaving you with a solid silver clay piece
While moulding your clay, cracks may appear. Simply rub gently with water and cracks should heal
Sponge abrasive pads are ideal for this. Once your piece has dried and before firing, you can use the abrasive pads to really smooth the surface. Keep turning your piece and check in different lighting to ensure you catch any tiny bumps and nicks because once fired, anything you may have missed will become visible and will not be something you are able to remove.
If you overheat your clay, it will simply begin to melt. Hold the flame at a 45 degree angle and heat your piece fully. The organic binder should burn off and leave you with a piece covered in a white coating. Keep heating until you see a peace glow from your flame. You will need to keep this peachy glow for the desired time (which can be found on the back of clay packets). If the flame gets darker or you see silver flashes, it means your piece is getting too hot, simply move the flame back, let it cool a little and see if you can get the peachy glow back.
