What are Rolling Mills?

Rolling mills are tools fitted with steel rollers, through these rollers you can feed through metal sheet and wire to reduce the thickness. For beginner jewellery makers in particular, rolling mills can seem quite intimidating but they are a great investment for your workshop.

Rolling mills are also a great way to add texture to sheet, passing sheet through the rollers with leaves, netting or anything else is a great way to do this.

Whether you want to upgrade your current rolling mill or are looking to make your first purchase, a rolling mill is a fantastic investment and will provide great versatility to your jewellery making. Shape and form your metal consistently, flatten sheet to a thinner gauge, add texture to your sheet, reshape wire and even make jump rings the opportunities are endless, rolling mills are a great time and money saver for any jewellery maker.

How to use a Rolling Mill

There are many uses of a rolling mill, once you have chosen the right mill for your needs, then ensure you have either secured the mill to your bench or rolling mill stand. How you use a rolling mill depends on what you use it for, if you just want to roll and flatten your sheet and wire then based on the gear ratio and the maximum sheet and wire capacity of your mill, you simple need to turn the handle and pass your metal through the rollers.

In order to add texture to your metal you will need to place your chosen material onto your metal and run it through the rollers, this may require loosening the gap in your rollers but this will all depend on the thickness of your wire.

If you are using a rolling mill for the first time, it is a great idea to watch some tutorials and videos first and practice your technique as this is the best way to develop your skills and truly start making your rolling mill work for you.
