Gold filled jewellery uses a carat gold overlay which is then bonded to a brass inner core. We manufacture gold filled jewellery supplies with 1/20th 14 carat gold, meaning it is 5% 14 carat gold by weight with a brass core (90% Copper / 10% Zinc).
Gold filled and gold plated jewellery have many differentiating factors. Gold filled uses a mechanical process to bond a layer of gold to a brass base metal using heat and pressure. Electroplating, used in gold plated pieces, is a very thin layer of gold which may tarnish quickly. Gold filled jewellery has inherent value in 5% of its weight being 14ct gold. The amount of gold in gold plated jewellery is insignificant and has little value.
Gold plated jewellery is often associated with low quality. It can wear and tarnish easily and will sometimes react with the wearer?s skin. Whereas Gold filled jewellery is more similar to 14ct gold in its resistance to wear and tarnish and shares the same resemblance to 14ct gold.
Comparing Gold Filled to 9ct and Gold Plated
There are only a few limitations of gold filled jewellery. It cannot be cast, because the gold and base metal will mix. Gold filled also cannot be diamond cut, which would expose the base metal to tarnish and reduce the percentage of gold.
