What is Kumihimo?

Kumihimo is a Japanese word which means the ‘bringing together of threads’. It originally was the method of creating finger-loop braids, but it now widely recognised by many jewellers and beaders as a technique that covers several different kinds of braiding. Kumihimo braids allow you to create many types of jewellery from bracelets, to earrings to necklaces. One of its attractions is that is allows you to be as creative as you like. Many people also consider the art of Kumihimo as a form of relaxation.

Kumihimo Techniques

Kumihimo is easy to work with and only a few accessories are required at a time. There are two types of accessories which once purchased, can be used all the time and for many creative projects. To create a flat braid, use the Square plate. For a more cylinder braid, use the Round disc. Each disc or plate has a number of notches, these are designed to hold the thread in place and maintain tension. To really personalise your Kumihimo jewellery piece, you can add seed beads, glass beads or even a few charms. View our Beads and Charms to find the pieces most personal to you. This type of jewellery making allows you to experiment and hone in your talent.
