Emery Paper

Emery paper is a Swiss made, high-quality product and whilst overlooked, it can be one of the most useful products in your workshop. Constructed of one side paper, and one side of ground emery (a naturally occurring Mediterranean rock), emery paper is versatile as it can be used on materials such as metal, glass and stones.

Papers with a lower number, have larger grits – which are better for working with metal at the earlier preparation stage. For jewellery making purposes, you’ll find that the finer grades are more useful such as 150 which is useful for removing deep scratches and cleaning up rough work. The idea is to work up in grades, becoming finer at each step, and once your material has been buffed with a 600 grade emery paper, it is ready to be polished with Tripoli and Rouge.

Many jewellers find that they simply need 3 grades of emery paper to achieve their work, one fine, one medium and one rough. Once you reach past 1000 grade emery paper, the surface is very smooth and can be used to smooth surfaces to achieve a clean and polished finish. A popular method of sanding down rings is to lay the emery paper of a flat surface and prepare the metal pieces against the flat sheet.

Strips of papers can be used of a sawing motion to smooth down round bars and thicker wire, as well as removing scratches from the inside of rings through the use of flexi shaft tool. For the more creative jeweller, you can use emery paper to create buff sticks, by wrapping emery paper around a small wooden block or round dowel (perfect for rings).
