The opal’s iridescent nature with its display of rainbow colours, changes with the angle of observation. This is caused by small spheres of silica gel which make up the structure of opal which diffracts the light as it passes through it, making every opal unique in its appearance. The iridescence of the stone can be seen against a white back ground (white opal) or a black background (black opal). The name opal comes from the Greek term “opallios” translating to “colour change”. Ancient Romans believed that these gemstones to be a symbol of hope because they contain the colours of the rainbow, while the Arabs thought that the fiery colour was created while falling from the sky in flashes of lightening.
We currently stock cabochon shaped white opal stones, available in sizes ranging from 1.5mm to 6mm. Contemporary opal jewellery designs are becoming quite popular and can be made into astonishing bracelets and necklaces or opal birthstone gifts given during the month of October.
