We are proud to have served in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter since 1918, one of Europe's largest concentration of businesses involved in the jewellery trade, producing 40% of all the jewellery made in the UK. Over the last century we have supported an array of jewellery making, from the very best of traditional craftsmanship and industrial service, through to pioneering practices of today and tomorrow.
Cooksongold and our location in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter is the result of a series of acquisitions. Our location in Vittoria Street was originally the site of Johnson Matthey Jewellery Ltd, as in 1918 they wanted to establish a base in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter to supplement their main premises in Hatton Garden. It was quickly established as a manufacturing site and sales office to serve both jewellery manufacturers and Industrial users in the Midlands area. The business grew considerably in the early years constantly expanding its range of products and production facilities, and as a result further premises next door on Vittoria Street were acquired and converted for use as production, stock holding and a new trade counter. In 1982 the decision was made by the Johnson Matthey Board to transfer the headquarters of its jewellery business from its site in London to the Vittoria Street premises. In 1994 following the Cookson Group PLC's acquisition of Johnson Matthey Jewellery Ltd the business accelerated in growth. In 2013 we became part of the Heimerle + Meule Group, starting a period of more dynamic investment into pioneering technologies, partnered with our expertise in traditional jewellery making supplies.
