What is Silver Clay?
Made from particles of fine silver, mixed with an organic binder and water, silver clay looks and feels very much like any other ordinary sculpting clay but when fired, the organic binder burns away and leaves behind a pure metal piece. The clay can be moulded, shaped and textured by hand or by using specialist clay tools. As such a versatile way of making jewellery, silver clay gives you the option to create complex and intricate designs.

Silver clay is so popular because not only is it easy to use but so versatile too. All it takes is a little practice and an understanding of how to fire clay and you should be able to create a finished piece with each.
Here are some of our best tips:
Rolling and Texturing Clay – It is important to have the right tools, use a mat and a clay roller to roll out your silver clay. When creating your piece, an understanding of the exact amount of clay you need and thickness required. Pretty much anything can be used to add texture to clay, you simply need to place your textured piece under your clay and roll.
Drying – drying time is important when working with silver clay. Before firing it is important that you let your piece sit and dry for at least 20 minuetes. Usually your clay packet will include such instructions.
Firing – Silver clay can be fired with either a handheld torch or a clay kiln, this is all dependent on the piece you are creating and the quantity. For torch firing you will need to understand how to move your flame, to heat your piece evenly, keep going until your piece is glowing under the torch and keep an eye on how the binder is burning away. Firing with a kiln requires a little less effort, simply place on your kiln shelf and set the correct temperature. Again your clay packet will have all of the relevant instructions.
