What are jewellery rolling mills?

A rolling mill is an essential workshop tool for jewellers who want to shape, thin, or texture metal. Fitted with hardened steel rollers, these machines allow you to feed through metal sheet and wire to consistently reduce the thickness.

Rolling mills are also a great way to add texture to sheets. You can pass sheets through the rollers with leaves, netting, or anything else.

Rolling mills are also a fantastic way to add unique textures. To achieve striking surface effects, pass sheet metal through the rollers with materials such as leaves or netting.

A rolling mill may seem intimidating to beginners, but it’s one of the most versatile and rewarding investments you can make in your jewellery-making setup.

How to use a jewellery rolling mill

Once you’ve selected the rolling mill that meets your requirements, ensure it’s firmly attached to your workbench or a rolling mill stand.

To flatten the sheet or wire, set the rollers to the desired thickness and feed the metal through while turning the handle. If you want to add texture, place your chosen material (such as fabric, leaves, or mesh) on the metal before passing it through the rollers. Depending on the thickness, you may need to adjust the roller gap.

If you’re using a rolling mill for the first time, we recommend watching tutorial videos and practising your technique to develop your skills and make the most of your new tool.
