What is a Cultured Pearl?

At Cooksongold, we have a wide selection of loose cultured pearls on offer. But what is a cultured pearl when compared to freshwater pearls for jewellery making? While natural freshwater pearls are becoming increasingly rare, the production of cultured pearls has expanded since the nineteenth century to provide an accessible alternative. Cultured pearls are manmade by inserting a small bead into the mollusc, which is then left to produce the pearls over several years – whereas natural freshwater pearls grow without any human intervention.

Loose Pearl Gemstones for Sophisticated Jewellery Designs

The beautiful iridescent lustre of a loose pearl comes from the interference of light reflected from the thin layers of nacre, which cover the pearl stone’s surface. Historically, pearls have been seen as a symbol of innocence, faith and purity. Jewellery made with pearl gemstones is perfect for sophisticated occasions and is quite popular amongst jewellers for use in creating a pearl set – either for a celebratory pearl bracelet or drop earring collection. When using cultured pearls in your designs, be creative; use several colours of loose pearls within your jewellery design, especially when trying out a more modern look.

We currently stock round and pear-shaped loose pearl gemstones, with different pearl colours available. The collection includes white, grey, pink, brown and multi-coloured options, ranging in sizes from 1mm to 7mm.
