Lapis Lazuli Gemstones

Lapis is a deep blue opaque gemstone, with golden pyrite inclusions. It may also contain white flecks of calcite. Lapis has a hardness of 5.5 on the Mohs' scale, which makes it quite soft, meaning it can chip easily, so take care when handling the gemstone and creating intricate pieces

Use Lapis Lazuli in Intricate Jewellery Pieces

The name lapis lazuli is a combination of the Latin “lapis” for “stone” and the Arabic “lazaward” for “blue”. It has an ancient history going back to around 4000 BC, known for being the most highly prized gemstone used by Egyptians for making jewellery. When ancient Egyptian pharaoh King Tut was discovered in his tomb, the golden sarcophagus was found embedded with lapis. Whilst the Egyptians ground Lapis down to uses as eyeliner kohl, by the Middle Ages, it was being used to dye paint and colour cloth with its deep blue hue that was so highly prized at the time.

Our range of lapis stones are available in cabochons shapes, ranging in sizes from 4mm right through to 12mm. Perfect for creating brightly coloured jewellery, lapis lazuli makes for a charming addition to rings, earrings and bracelet collections.
