How to make a charm necklace – step by step

If you’re just starting out in the world of charm jewellery making, try this 5-minute make to create a pretty charm necklace.

Adding a pendant or series of jewellery charms to a necklace is an instant way to change a look and add a new twist or theme. It can be achieved in minutes and is infinitely customisable, which presents endless possibilities in terms of design. Simply choose your theme and away you go!

Step One

leather necklet

Lay out your leather necklet and take a look at the fittings on each end. Although small, these fittings will prevent you from sliding most pendants and jewellery charms directly onto the necklace. Instead, we will need to add an additional fitting to facilitate this process.

If you look at the jewellery charms, they both have a small ring at the top and this is what enables them to be gathered together and suspended onto a chain or cord. In this instance, one jump ring will thread through both charms so they will hang, one on top of the other. This creates a more casual and contemporary look.

Step Two

Using the pliers, grip the jump ring at each end and twist to open it out, leaving a wide enough gap to slide on the charms. Slide on the anchor first, followed by the compass.

Step Three

Then, keeping hold of the jump ring with your pliers, simply slide it onto the charm necklace cord and push the open ends together to close the gap. Ensure the jump ring is closed completely and lines up evenly and your charm necklace is ready to be worn.

Charm jewellery making

N.B. For the purposes of this project, we used a leather necklet which makes a great unisex option. However, pendants and charms jewellery can be added to just about anything you please, whether it’s an existing pendant chain or a length of ribbon, the choice is entirely up to you. The colours and materials you choose will determine whether the finished piece is formal or more casual and fun so be prepared to experiment and push the boundaries a little.
