Great tool but check the price

This is a great tool, but at the time of writing I bought this same kit from a high street store for half the price of cooksons. So do be aware of that. This kit comes with a single point and a letter stencil. The first thing to note is that this is an impact engraver, it makes a texture by hammering the sharp point into the metal very quickly to create tiny dots. This has the advantage that it does not remove any material. Unlike rotary engravers such as a regular Dremel or flex shaft, which use burrs to cut or file away material. As such this reciprocating action makes it very easy to use, but the engraving wont be quite as deep as with the rotary systems.I have been using mine to produce a sparkly satin texture on sterling silver rings, rather like you'd get with flick mop. The effect really is lovely and perfectly uniform. I use it like a pen to simply shade in the areas I want textured. very simple and a great result. This is on the lowest setting. On the higher settings the tip moves back and forth a greater distance, at the same speed giving more impact on the surface and producing larger and deeper dots. This creates a rougher texture like a nail file or fine glitter. Again very beautiful and far more precise than trying to get small rotary tools into such tiny areas.I even used an old burr and ground it down to a fine point to get into some tiny areas on a ring. So you can make your own matting punches and use the Dremel to hammer them. I will also make a blunt one for hammering down bezels round cabochons. There are so many uses for this thing, and a fraction of the cost of a reciprocating hand piece for the flexi shaft. On wood it really goes a couple of mm deep, giving an almost carved appearance, but again it does not remove any material so very clean and easy to do.In use its quite noisy, it is after all hammering hundreds of times a second. I wear ear defenders when using it. I wouldn't recommend using it for more than an hour at a time. As your hands will become numb with the vibration, especially the one holding the piece. It's quite fatiguing working with a vibrating tool. That said, its light, comfortable and easy to control. so for engraving name tags, adding texture , or tracing designs its a great addition.Note this only comes with one tip, I'd recommend getting some more. They also make a carbide tip, which is better for hard metals and glass engraving. For the money, its a real bargain. So, So useful.

great texture

This was recommended to me by a teacher as a great way to do a texture to match existing work, covering up a solder seam for example on a shell or leaf. Easy to use and nice to hold, it is going to be one of the most used tools in the workshop. Can be rather noisy though, like any electric engraver

Dremel Engraver

I have just used my Dremel Engraver for the first time and I am very pleased with it. I dont think you could necessarily do traditional style engraving but you can create a very nice effect with this engraver with a little practice and of course you have the benefits of not having to send your piece off to be engraved and spend quite a lot of money in the process. So if you think you have a steady hand and nice hand writing then this engraver is for you Its a good price too
