What is the opal birthstone?

The opal is the birthstone for October. A natural stone, the Opal is often considered the ideal stone for encouraging creativity. Measuring anywhere between 5 and 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale.

The range of opal stones we stock here are cabochon stones available in a variety of shapes and sizes. From round and oval shapes to pear shaped and more, opal birthstones are a great choice for bracelets, necklaces and earrings and can be used to create standout designs.

Types of opals and their characteristics

Opals are often found in Australia, central Europe and the United States. There are many types of opals, including fire opals and white opals. Opals are favoured for the unique colour flashes that are caused by light diffraction. Each opal has its own unique colour, making them perfect for creating unique jewellery designs,

How to care for opal birthstones

Reaching at most 6.5 on the Mohs scale, opals require careful handling and are easily susceptible to damage. It is advised that only warm, soapy water should be used to clean opal stones and harsh chemicals are avoided at all times.

Opal stones can be easily damaged so it is advised that stones are not worn during any physical activity to avoid scratching and therefore are considered more suitable for earrings and brooches as opposed to rings.
