Create these simplistic and fun butterfly wing earrings, perfect as a gift or to add to your collection. This butterfly wing design can also be replaced for your own creative earring designs.

Step 1
Draw around the 20mm silver disc blank on a piece of paper, cut out and fold in half.
Then draw out your butterfly wings using the curves of the circle to form your design, then cut them out.

Step 2
Place the wings on the Silver disc and draw around with a scribe, pen or with something with a point such as nail.

Step 3
Place the Silver disc on the benchpeg and cut out each butterfly wing using your piercing saw.
Use your benchpeg to support the Silver disc.

Step 4
Use your needle files to remove any rough edges by supporting the wings on your benchpeg and running the file over the edges in a smooth action.

Step 5
Use emery sticks or micromesh flexifiles to smooth the edges. You can also shine the edges using a burnisher by running the burnisher over the edges.

Step 6
Layout the two wings and make sure they are a mirror image. Mark out a mirror image of dots with a pen. This is to add the decoration to the butterfly wings.
Place your centre punch on the dots and strike the top of the centre punch with a hammer to leave a mark.

Step 7
Use the centre punch marks to drill through the Silver or leave as detail.

Step 8
Place the butterfly wing face down on your soldering brick and place the Silver stacking ring on top so it lines up with curve of the butterfly wing. Then, add flux to where the two pieces of metal meet and add a small amount of easy solder at either end.
Remember to leave a gap between the butterfly wing and the ring. This is for your earring hook wire to go through this gap so the earrings hang correctly.

Step 9
Gently heat the two Silver pieces using a hand blow torch until the solder melts and flows. Quench in water using tweezers and add to a warm pickle solution. Repeat to make the second earring.

Step 10
Once clean and dry, use the polishing cloth to add shine or if you have a barrel tumbling machine, tumble the earrings for half an hour or until you are happy with the finish.

Step 11
Take a Silver hook wire and grip the loop either side with flat nose pliers in one hand and snipe/chain nose pliers in the other. Twist the pliers to open.

Step 12
Thread the loop wire through the earring. Make sure you have the earring facing forward when worn. Close the earring hook by gripping the loop either side with the pliers and reversing the twisting action.
