Applying an outer layer of gold to a less valuable metal base is nothing new. But the process of gold filling is a much more recent development and, as you’ll see, it’s a great alternative to overlaying or coating.

When you’ve experienced gold filled jewellery, chances are you really will start to see gold plating as a little… should we say… 1980s… somewhat, well, passé even.

Much thicker, more durable and altogether more modern, gold filled jewellery is created by mechanically bonding a layer of gold to a thicker layer of base metal, principally brass. To qualify as ‘gold filled’, your jewellery will need to be a bonded layer of 9ct., 12ct. or 14ct. gold that represents at least 5% of the overall metal content of the piece by weight. And, while rolled gold and gold overlay are produced by a similar process, the gold layer is usually much less than 5% of the weight, while gold bonded is often made of 95% silver and 5% gold. Gold plated, on the other hand, is produced by a very different process with the layer of gold being very much thinner and of far inferior quality to gold filled products. As an added bonus, gold filled chain, unlike plate, can also easily be soldered.

What is the quality of gold filled products like?

High quality gold filled pieces look just like pure 9ct., 12ct. or 14ct. gold. They can last for up to 30 years without the gold surface being worn away but, as with everything, this can vary depending on how well you look after the item. At Cooksongold, all our gold filled products are 14ct. gold and brass and quality is truly exceptional, making for an excellent addition to your product range.

How can gold filled be used?

Gold filled products can be used as a cost-effective alternative to base metal jewellery or a more affordable alternative to solid gold. Gold filled can be used for chains, bracelets, earrings, rings and many findings such as clasps, jump rings, ear wires and end caps for chains.

Caring for gold filled jewellery

The one big no-no here is using chemicals to clean this type of jewellery. Instead, simply clean regularly with soapy water and then lightly pat down to dry with a soft, non-scratching cloth and finally polish your piece with a soft jewellery polishing cloth. Never put the item in an ultrasonic or have it polished professionally by a jeweller as this will remove a thin layer of the gold from the item!

A solid gold alternative and an affordable present

Gold filled jewellery is often referred to in the trade as the ‘wave of the future’, meaning that the future will be more about achieving the glamour, luxury and elegance of gold rather than simply flaunting the price tag! Which is precisely what gold filled is all about. The affordable price, of course, also makes it ideal to give as a present.
