Silver jewellery making, is the art of creating jewellery with silver.

The creative opportunities when working with precious metals are endless, but being able to do so requires some knowledge and expertise which is where we want to come in. As a part of our how to make jewellery hub, we want to help new jewellery makers get to drips with a range of skills including silver jewellery making. If you’re struggling to get started with creating jewellery with sheet wire or solder there is a lot to consider which is why we want to help.

What choice of metal should I begin with?

Silver is a great material to work with, especially if you are looking to begin working in precious metals. If this is your first time working with precious metals then copper or brass is a great choice to start with as it is easy to use and cost effective – this makes it perfect for practicing. Additionally, base metals, such as copper or brass, have a much higher melting temperature and are more durable than silver, or other precious metals, so you can work confidently with them while developing your skills.

What types of bullion do I need?

Precious metals can be purchased in a wide variety of forms; wire, sheet and solder mkaing up a small selection of the bullion available – the type of bullion you need is really dependent on what you want to make.

What jewellery tools do I need?

Have you got the right tools? It is important when working with metal to invest in the right tools.  We have a huge range of essential workshop tools and also a range of kits that include everything you need to get started.

The exact jewellery tools you will need depends on what processes you plan to tackle first, consider versatile and long lasting hand tools such as a saw frame, files, emery sticks, pliers, a scriber, and jobbing hammers.

Will I be soldering right away?

Soldering is the process of joining two separate pieces of metal. This is done by applying heat, allowing the solder to melt and flow onto a clean and flush join. When soldering you will use flux or borax to help the solder in flowing and pickle to clean the metal after soldering. Although this is important in working with metals, it won’t be something you will immediately start doing, first practice your fundamental making skills and then practice soldering, after watching a few videos and reading a few tutorials of course! Soldering isn’t easy but with some practice and time you will get there.

Silver jewellery making is a very complex process that will take a lot of practice and training to truly grasp. The above are just a few very basic points to consider but there will be a lot you will need to learn and understand before you’re making your own earrings, rings and so much more. Stick at it, read up on everything you can, invest in the right tools and you’ll be making jewellery in no time.

Save this for later
