Simple, versatile, good value

I've been using this versatile set for a few months now and find it to be an excellent addition to my small workshop.I'd wanted to make anticlastic bangles for some time but have a very limited budget so was very pleased to find this from a reliable manufacturer at a reasonable price for what's included.I like the fact that the different dies allow you to form both flat and anticlastic bangles and that the whole thing fits into whatever bench vice you already have though I had to buy one. I was a bit disappointed to find that the actual dies needed a good clean and polish before use - they were rather tarnished on receipt but a good dose of 3-in-1 on a rag brought them up to their description of 'hardened and ground to a high polish'. I do occasionally add a drop or two of 3-in-1 to the carrier bar to get a nice smooth turning of the die and I keep them in a poly bag with a light coating of oil too.I've used all of the various dies to produce both flat and anticlastic bangles and cuffs, getting a beautifully true shape each time. If you are putting a pattern on your cuff, do this first to your flat shape then anneal and clean it up before hammering on the chosen die. You'll find that the mallet is gentle enough on your texture. However, if you want a perfectly smooth finish I would caution that the supplied mallet does not give this - it does leave marks, as you can clearly see if you watch the video - so use a different mallet for flat shapes or expect to do a fair bit of smoothing and finishing if you're making an anticlastic form and therefore have to use the supplied mallet. I'd say, as with any new tool, experiment a bit before committing yourself to an expensive sheet of silver. I actually rather like the texture the mallet leaves and have used it all over some of my cuffs to give a sort of leathery, matt finish.I've also used the smaller dies to turn out anticlastic rings and pendants, improvising again with hammers and mallets. All in all, I've found this to be a great product that encourages you to be inventive and experiment with your designs.
