    Default tube settings

Good morning all - I am pricing a commission for some gold earrings and wonder if it is easier to work with 9ct or 18ct? I have diamonds which need to be tube set preferably. I have set the odd cab in 9ct and found it very hard to push over smoothly, so would like to make the right choice in view of the costs involved. Thanks guys

Hi Theresa, I have found even quite small settings tough to close in 18 carat too, so I don't think there is much difference. The secret is to thin the tubing from outside, before trying to close it, to reduce its resistance.

When setting small stones, I ease the edges of the tubing over the stones with round nosed pliers. This stresses delicate work less and is kind to hands. Have a try with silver tubing and CZ's first and see whether you agree. Dennis.

Thanks Dennis, I use silver tubing a lot for facets & cabs and do as you say, so far I have not had a problem. I am just very wary about gold because of the costs involved.
