Default Starting Uni - What do I need!

Just wondering what you peeps have accumulated or are planning to buy before starting your courses? What tools are really necessary to start with? Are kits worth investing in or just buy seperately? Can you recommend any must-have??? Would be really grateful!

Hi Lydia the start up kit that Cooksons have seems like a good deal and lots and lots of sawblades lol, have they not given you a list of equipement? A lot of the tools i bought a urhum years ago are still going stong and i am terrible at looking after them.

I accumulated tools as I went along. You can usually use what they have and as you start to work you find out what is relevent to you and what you use the most. I managed with very few initially until I found out what was really important to me and my style of work. No point in buying loads of tools that you might not use, better to buy them as you go along.

    Hi Lydia
A lot of equipment e.g. rolling mills etc should be at the uni, I'd get personal tools to enable you to start or finish work at home (+ things like cutters etc get scragged if they're shared!)

You can make up your own basic kit OR
The Cooksons Student Starter Kit is very good value at £59.99 + vat (free delivery until the 30th Sept)
    It contains:
999 096 Plastic tool box with removable tray.
    Emery sticks 4 x assorted shapes/grades.
    999 458 Vallorbe flat handle file 150mm x Cut 2.
    999 488 100mm Wooden Handle.
999 528 Set of six needle files 160mm, cut 2.
999 735 Saw Frame, Depth of Frame 3".
    972 060 Vallorbe saw blade 2/0 x 1 dozen.
    999 577 Steel Rule 30cm / 12"
    999 589 Steel Scribe 120mm.
    999 694 Pliers snipe nose 130mm.
    999 698 Pliers round nose 130mm.

    To that I'd add
    Flush cutters
    A 'Ball Pein' hammer
    A rawhide mallet
    Ring mandrel
    Bench Peg with block £9.99

    For home Soldering:
    Tweezers
    Gas torch
    Soldering Block
    Solder
    Safety Pickle
    Pick
    Cheapo £10 slow cooker

Or try cooksons student soldering kit £62.97 + vat (free delivery til 30th)

    Safety First!
    Safety glasses
    Dust Mask

Hope that helps - probably other stuff but that covers most of the basics
