Durable Clear Sealant for Hand Painted Resin Pendant?

Hi everyone,

I make pendants out of resin which have hand painted details. I recently received one back for a repair as the chain had broken, and I noticed that some of the hand painted details have rubbed off already (after only a couple of weeks of being owned and worn)

Right now I use several coatings of 'Humbrol Gloss Cote', which is solvent based, to seal in the hand painted areas and give an overall gloss finish.

There's a chance that this customer has been particularly rough with hers given the breakage, but I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a clear sealant which is really tough and will not yellow?

I just tried doing a test with crystal clear Araldite, but it sits on the surface and puddles. I've also tried using an enamelling 2 part resin, hand painted onto the surface, but that had the same problem where it separates.

Any help or advice is really appreciated, thanks so much

Obviously your decorative colours are not durable enough. Can you use a marque of colours with a recommended protective coat?

Can you add a layer of clear (doming) resin over the top of your hand painted details? That is a technique I have seen other resin artists use. Something like these: https://www.resin8.co.uk/doming-resin-78-c.asp

There is also brand of doming resin called mod podge my partner uses it to make dragon eyes

You could do some research into ceramic coatings similar to those used for car bodywork, gadget protection etc. They are expensive but the quantities used for jewellery making are so small that a bottle should last a while.

Be mindful of shelf life though - some of them are very short once opened!

Thank you very much for the responses everyone. The ceramic coatings sounds like a good call - something more industrial and less hobbyist which is made to last. I really appreciate the advice!

How are you painting these?
In my mind are you pouring a thin layer, then painting when cured and then doming the top? It shouldnt wear then?
Only ive done a few resin pieces but had to stop when i looked like elephant man with the reaction i had!!!
I couldnt be bothered with finishing touches so used a good jewellery resin to save time.
