    Default Oxidising with torch?

I've been reading the thread about the Platinol issue and just wondered, if you just want to darken silver to achieve an antiqued look or to emphasise a pattern is there any reason you couldn't just use the torch to blacken it and polish back the high areas rather than using chemicals? Is it because using a chemical solution is longer lasting? I've not really experimented with oxidising (apart from a go at the egg method) but would rather not use chemicals if possible.

CJ57 recently posted a very good account on patination of silver, including with a torch. I saved it a a PDF file, but am puzzled as to how to post it here again.

However here are two snips from it, relative to silver. Dennis.

Thank you Caroline and Dennis for that, didn't know the bit about plunging it into boiling water. I've saved the info for future reference.
