    Default Black Spots & Scratches

Hi I wonder if you can help. Ive just made my first piece of jewellery - a hammered heart pendant. But there seems to be a few black spots on it. Can anyone explain to me why and how can i get rid of them. Also, I've done hammered effect as I don't know how to get rid of the scratches on the heart. Anyone able to help me? Thank you very much. Ruth

I think this will need some pictures Ruth.

To get rid of scratches you can use abrasive papers, micro mesh sheets, or if you have a motor, radial wheels.

Textured and hammered finishes come up well with just a wet and soapy jewellers brass brush, or a brass brush for suede shoes, at a pinch.
This might well remove your spots if they are only superficial, but first re-heat gently and re- pickle. Dennis.

If you've been annealing or soldering, the black spots may be firescale so would need a bit of extra work to get rid of unless you give it a matt finish then they aren't so obvious

Increasingly fine emery or wet & dry papers will get rid of your scratches. I'd then use a polishing compound on a dremel type tool (say tripoli or luxi blue, with a final polish with rouge or luxi white or orange.

Are the black spots near solder points? May be the solder hadn't quite flowed propèrly ands needs a redo.
