    The gold should be perfectly durable for wear, as it's applied to statues that are outdoors and chatsworth house has gold leaf window frames as it is more durable than paint.

    I would use gold size or gum Arabic to apply it and allow to fully dry as burnishing is traditionally done with agate, I would try wrapping the pearl in thin soft cloth and then rub it against a smooth flat surface and see if that brings op the lustre sufficiently..

    First attempt not successful as I probably didn't clean out the pearls inside sufficiently rigorously and probably was too impatient to allow the glue to dry off before applying the leaf. So it looks like a real mush. Overall promising though, so I will clean if off and try again.
