    Default Arachnophilia.

I was asked to make a spider pendant on a long chain. It is not to everybody’s taste, but I have tried to keep it as friendly as possible.

The legs and appendages are made from an old foxtail chain, fused to make it stiff. The thorax has a pear shaped labradorite and the eyes are tiny green tourmalines. Spiders can have many eyes, I have learned, but always an even number.

The twisted rope chain passes through tunnels in the frame, so that the ends could be pulled well clear for soldering the end caps, after everything else was finished.

At the back there is a spring loaded adjuster, to vary the length. The wishbone shaped spring is made from a piece of rolled down easy solder, which is just the right width and exerts gentle pressure.

    Hexagonal frame: 23 x 23mm
    Rope chain: 800 x 2.0mm Dennis

Brilliant Dennis! It looks extremely arachnoidy.
As always your imagination and ingenuity seem endless.

I love the clever spring loaded chain adjuster.
Is the capsule made by you or is it a proprietary finding?

That's fab Dennis - I can't fault it! The slider is very clever indeed!

Well I am not a big fan of the arachnid in the real world, but his little head & those eyes are just darling! Lovely piece of labradorite too, how did you make the scallopy bezel Dennis?

Thank you Tim, The capsule was made by me and the short piece of tube was threaded with a tap to take the 2.0mm dia. stainless steel screw, which came from stock. The patch on the back was to give enough material to countersink the head.

Thank you George. Your comment is much appreciated, especially as I feel really old fashioned now with all this computer generated design around.

Thank you Faith. That really is the beauty of bezels. You can scallop away material for a frilly edge using burrs and files. You can go on until you have only a few areas remaining to act as claws, or you can scallop the lower edge before soldering, to give a more open effect for faceted stones. Dennis.

Very nice, even better that it is not computer aided, (however the real thing is not to my liking)

I love her! I especially like the eyes. I hope you don't mind me posting some of my silver spiders Dennis. Folk either love them or hate them - one was bought by a lady who's father had discovered and named a spider after her, and one lady screamed and swore one had moved at a craft show (she wouldn't believe I didn't have it attached to fishing wire!). I make them irregularly, but love doing them when the mood striked me.

    Thank you Sarah and Bob.
Thank you Lydia, I could go for your spiders in a big way.
Thank you Joseph.Surprisingly I balked at using a strip of solder for the spring for a while, even though I knew it couldn't melt. Dennis.
