I'm a bit late to the discussion, but that's a lovely stand - looks professionally made!

Here's my solution. It doesn't have quite the finished look, but it's works well and doesn't take up any space.

There are two 6mm neodymium magnets inside the brass tube and 1 magnet embedded in the edge of my bench. It provides a very secure temporary resting point. I can also use a bench block as the stand for a bit more flexibility with positioning. The attachment also acts as a hook for its storage position.
