Default A Boat Shaped Mount For A Marquise Stone.

One of or class projects last term was to make a boat shaped mount for a marquise stone, from a dome cut in half, the edges rubbed smooth and then re-assembled.
It is also possible to remove a wedge shaped piece for a shallower boat.

The starting diameter of the metal disk used needs to be about 25% greater than the stone is long. The chosen hollow of the doming cube should have a similar curvature to the girdle of the stone.

Once made it is still possible to tweak the overall shape with parallel pliers, or a safe vice for a better match. The height of the sides is then filed to be only just above the girdle of the stone.

My first picture shows a large display piece for our classroom cupboard.
Picture 2 shows the mount on a ring. The bearer has been cut with burrs, so is a little ragged.
Picture 3 shows the finished ring using a 12x6mm CZ, which we were given. Dennis.

Thank you Carin. I'm hoping someone here will try it now. Dennis.

I've often thought of giving that technique a try Dennis.. so I for one shall be doing just that. Beautiful looking ring.

Thank you for looking, Lauren and Nick. It's not that difficult and satisfying to do. Dennis.
