    As I only do OS now, my OH mostly has it down pat, we greet people, tell them where everything is, if there is anything they want to know, try on, or anything else just ask and tell them the price list is there if they are interested. That seems to work in our situation because feedback tells us that they don't like to be ignored as some just sit and read a book or chat to their friends. It seems to be a fine balancing act of being pleasant but not too intrusive

    But not *too* enthusiastic - some of us round here can get a bit carried away with the minutiae of the subject...

    Even if you are talking to one customer a quick 'Be right with you' is usually enough to show you have noticed that they exist. Or even eye contact and a nod. It's a bit like air traffic control!
