Hello,
I have a sterling silver ring with the synthetic stone set. Would it be damaged anyhow if I try to sulfur the ring? Thank you everybody

Hi Sam,
Artificial stones wont be changed, but oxidising solutions such as Platinol can linger in the cracks of claws and bezels and be difficult to clean up.
The best method is to use something like liver of sulphur or ammonium sulphide, where the object can be hung above it in a closed box. This way the silver will be blackened by just the vapour, although it will take longer.
Don't be surprised at the result though. The stones will loose some of their glamour against black, particularly if they are pale in colour and the process is difficult to reverse if you change your mind, without unsetting them.
Dark red is an exception, I think and can look quite dramatic. Dennis.
Thank you Dennis
