Handwriting / text on silver - how?!
Hi all.
I'd love to be able to include text on some of my jewellery designs, but I'm not sure how.
I know that I could buy metal stamps to use on silver
I know that I could learn to hand engrave (long job!)
But I don't think that either of those methods have been used to do what I'm looking for - something like in the pic.
This would be to do on sheet silver.
Any ideas?

That looks like laser engraving, like what Alan Hadley at Geti does. see;http://www.geti.cc/index.php/lasers/...ing-informaton

Thanks both
Will look into etching as it is something I'd like to be able to do myself

Just get yourself some really small carbide ball burrs for example 005.
If you draw or write what you want with the same size marker pen, with some practice you'll be able to do a reasonable job grinding it out.
You'll be able to blacken with something I'm sure.

A lot of that kind of personalised jewellery is made out of silver clay. The writing would be drawn / written onto the clay before firing.
If these cufflinks are sterling, then I agree with the above - It's probably laser engraved.

I'd say they're probably silver clay. For such an inexpensive item, I wouldn't expect them to be lasered, though I may be wrong.

The writing recesses can be filled in with a black Sharpie, which saves a lot of fuss and mess. This was originally suggested by George, some years back. Dennis

I thought the idea of clay was for sculpting rather than playing with, except for with the kids?

I believe that is a lettet stamp set as the same font is on a lot of etsy items (and the US has a huge range). There are a good collection available in the UK now, you just need plenty of practice on scrap/copper. I acid etch text too but it is not as clean (but that kind of suits my style - appeciate it is not for everyone)
