    Default Hair Fork

Just made this hair fork (a first) for my son's partner.
I rather like it but my husband thinks it's too heavy and will fall out.
I used 3mm round wire, it's 4.5" long in total, and curved to fit against the head. I feel it's ok at 20g. She has very long hair so I wanted something substantial. Has anyone made these before?

It's a thing of beauty Theresa, but let us know how it fares in use. I have tried several hair ornaments in silver only to find that the weight was against them. Even the most expensive ones in the stores are made of resin, or light weight base metal.

I have high hopes for yours though. Dennis.

Thanks Dennis - I'll let you know if it works!
I had the idea of making hair sticks first using chopsticks or knitting needles, but couldn't get the ends neat enough to take silver tube. (No lathe)

I always used hair sticks or prongs when I had long hair, and never really had an issue with the weight. However, you may find it helps to put some gentle grooves into the long tines as these help grip a little better - if they're completely smooth, it is easier for the pin to slide out.

I think it looks beautiful btw!

Lovely work, Theresa what is the stone / cab?

I'm sorry, but I can't help but think of nutcrackers when I look at it!

Lovely! If she has thick hair I should think the weight wouldn't be an issue? Thinner hair may present a problem though. Very nice

That is lovely Theresa, how thick are the tines? Just thinking about weight and strength of this type of piece

    Thats really lovely Theresa!
Ive no idea about the weight but currently making a barrette to order that will be hefty and am worried about that myself.
Do let us know, although I suspect that the individual hair will make a huge difference too.

A beautiful piece, Theresa - puts me in mind of something from Ancient Egypt or maybe Greece/Rome...? I also wondered about some sort of texturing to stop it sliding too easily - as George suggests, maybe file light grooves to give it some grip.
