    Default Graphite crucibles

    Hi All

Does any one use graphite crucibles as apposed to clay for meilting with a torch, are they more or less fragile than clay is there any reason not to use them

I use graphite crucibles for melting , mostly together with a small kiln, from my experience they last longer than clay crucibles but are a bit more expensive. Mine are from "Fischer" company in germany -(cause I live there) Make sure they are dry before putting them in a white hot furnace or they can crack - if you heat them slowly its no issue.
While these are sold as "Graphite-crucibles" I think its actually graphite with a clay binder.
The graphite crucibles for the small electric melting kilns with the lip on top are more often than not pure graphite.
