The trick to not melt the chain links on the back of the pendant is to apply the heat to the main pendant ( heat it up first ) then put some heat closer to where the links need soldering on. Hitting the loops first puts too much heat into them ending up in the melting you've experienced.

Yeah I thought so too Dennis agreed but sadly I left this too late to do but nothing can stop me from working on this after Xmas! 😊 I want to have a play with making my own chain and I need a torch that wont melt the entire chain except the link I am trying to solder... I can solder chain with the microweld at uni but cant afford one of those at home.... Wonder if I get a pencil flame attachment 'thing' for the seivert..

You just need a basic mini-torch, which is filled with lighter gas. They have an adjustment for flame size and a ring to close the air hole. Dennis.
