    Default Wallce Chan.

Wallace Chan has been in the news lately. He has even got a write up in the Economist. Must have good PR.

To summarise, he specialises in carved gemstones, supported on a cast titanium framework for lightness. The claws themselves have set diamonds. Unfortunately, If I look at this work for long enough, I feel as if I have eaten too much trifle. Or is that just sour grapes? Dennis

Lol! Dennis! some of it is a bit OTT blingy but from my very novice point of view its impressive, I can't even work out how most of it is done.
    Love the butterflies:

Too much trifle and then tiramisu Dennis! Prefer the grapes myself but then I like simple lines

You and me both Caroline - I'll take the grapes, perhaps with a nice bit of sharp cheddar...

I can admire the cleverness of it, but much prefer the sort of stone in stone work that Hans does, inter alia.

I agree George. I do admire it but it's an overload of all the senses. I couldn't imagine wearing it, if it is jewellery but wouldn't get much pleasure out of looking at it for long either.

I wonder what the name Wallace is all about? Perhaps it's meant to evoke Wallis Simpson, who had a similar taste in jewelry. It's not his real name of course.

Some pieces at least stay within reasonable boundaries of taste, but a lot of it looks like jewelry that's been through plastic surgery. It's probably aimed squarely at China's nouveaux riches, who typically haven't yet learned to distinguish between ostentation and opulence. A lot of his customers probably see nothing wrong with plastic surgery in the first place anyway, so there's a market there, for sure.

It is amazing but I agree that it's too blingy for me.

A huge amount of skill used to produce a lot of (IMO) ugly objects. The antithesis of "less is more", more is definitely less with these objects.

I love the butterflies and insects, but agree most of it I could never imagine wearing.
