Default 0.8 burr cup in conjunction with a Foredom?

    Hi all,

Wondering if you could help. I am looking to purchase a burr cup in 0.8 to round the ends of ear studs. I want to use it in conjunction with my Foredom.

Would either of these be suitable as I know the shank needs to be a certain size but can't work out the inches conversion.

    Thanks in advance.

The standard shank size for our needs is 3/32" or 2.35mm (close enough).

I use a 1mm burr for all of mine, even the 0.80mm wire.

    Thanks for that advice.

Patstone - can I ask why? Is there any greater advantage to this?

    Many thanks

Cup burrs are measured by their outer diameter, so if you're wanting to round off 0.8mm wire, you'll have a problem, as you actually need a 1.2mm cup.

Twincut versions do a better job as they actually clear the swarf as you work - the regular ones clog very quickly, and can blunt just as fast.

You'll usually still need to finish off with a fine file, emery board or micromesh to be absolutely sure they're completely smooth, and watch out for cut marks from the edge of the cup.

    Thanks for this advice Mizgeorge.

Patstone - do you use a hand held cup burr then or do you just shape by sanding?

You might consider a medium silicone wheel, as a cheaper option. They will also finish the edges of sheet, and when they need re- shaping they can be run on any diamond covered tool you happen to have.

Thanks Dennis - I think I have one of these in my kit I got with the foredom - I will dig it out.

Carole - newbie question - what is a roll sander?

    Thanks
