Default Tips on making multi strand spiral/twist 'drop' cage? (silver)

You know the things goodly folks - several equal length strands of wire, joined at each end and gradually bulging out towards the middle, with a twist/spiral effect top-to-bottom - well anyway I'm getting ready to make a pair (as earrings) and wondered if anyone could lend me a tip or two on the best way(s?) to approach this? - I'd normally just have at it and experiment until I got it right, but for this I haven't got the time at the moment, nor can I afford to mangle any nice silver...

As ever, thanks and be well!

If you're thinking of a regular cage style, the trick is to simply make a spiral on each end of a piece of wire, then fold in half and pull out from the middles. I may not be picturing what you have in mind correctly though!

That's a traditional form of decoration. Blacksmiths use it too for spikes on railings and the handles of fire irons.

It looks as if you will have to experiment after all then Shaun. If I were doing it I would try it with two pieces of binding wire, joined like a cross, then bent down and twisted for the top.

Then I would form the wires around a round bead, push the bead out of the bottom and close the lower point again. The shape of the bead will have caused the bulge in the cage and it should now be possible to close up the strands at the bottom and twist them about half a turn.

Mind you this is all theory and you will be doing the work. Dennis.
