whenever I soldered these type of fittings on in the past, the pin always ended up too short. Very peculiar. What type of brooch fittings are you looking at Carole?

I think the type that Dennis gave links to. The brooch is a snowflake design.
I've never got too upset about part of the finding showing through Carol, because when worn the pin is hidden anyhow. Below is an old Bunny brooch, pinned onto cloth.
The safety catch shown is 3.14mm wide (Cooksons smaller one only 2.10mm). For the hinge it's the length that matters and mine is4.00mm long.
I love that brooch, Dennis! His arms, whiskers and floppy ear makes it look like he's just popped out of the hat - he's adorable!

Well it is done:
I like it, but even though this was mostly a pratice piece not totally happy with how it finished up - too many avoidable scratches, the cutaway on the brooch pin assembly looks 'crude' and the resin pieces should have been tidier, but (and now for my excuses lol!) working from the corner of the computer table at far too low a height and in rather poor light I missed too much until It was too late - I REALLY can't wait to get into the new workshop and really start putting the 'experience' hours back in.
Shaun.
Pic from the back to show what I mean about the pin and scratches:
I must say the soldering together of the 3 separate half circles, the central strip and the back plate were a fun challenge for me and what I was really hoping to practice with this piece - I need many more hours at the bench yet ',;~}~
Cheers folks and be well.
Shaun.
I think you're beating yourself up a bit there! I love it - I thought it was ammolite - nice depth in the resin - lovely clean design
