Default What I bought this week

I like to have some safe jaws on my vice, but after ten years mine were getting a bit ragged. The plastic ones damage easily and rubber ones are far too soft, but these fibre jaws are firm and long lasting.

They fix to the vice by adapting the lugs with a mallet and don’t come adrift in use. Forget about those magnetic ones which end up on the floor, or the beaten up strips of aluminium favoured for cheapness.

If you also use your vice to hold stakes and mandrels, you would need to adapt them so that they can be lifted off for this.

Faithfull tools have an offer at present, so they are a good price too and come in a choice of eight lengths. They will grip metal without marking, to hold it, flatten it or straighten it. Dennis.

hmmmm… I was going to buy some copper as per the Revere and Lewton-Brain books, but those do look pretty spiffy.

Well as I don't hammer on it Donnie, it is only a 3½"vice. What is more (and this will disgust the professionals), is that it is not fixed to my bench, but mounted on a board with rubber feet, so that it can be moved away when not needed.

Incidentally my picture shows the wear on the ten year old jaws. Dennis.

My 4" vice is bolted to an Ikea kitchen trolley...
(my 6" is between benches at the moment, one of my post vices is waiting for a new bench, the other is attached to a steel stand I welded up... Got a few others around too)
