Default Grease - how to remove?

    Afternoon all,

I've just taken delivery of a new Durston Dapping set & disc cutter, and they look like great quality tools although I've not use them yet.

Both these tools, the punches & block etc, as well as my triblet came heavily greased up. Presumably this is to prevent any rust or moisture ingress when stored.

Question is.. What's recommended for removing the grease? Do I simply wipe clean with white spirit and then dry and polish with a felt mop or will this damage the metal?

    Cheers,

    Nick

According to Durston, white spirit is fine. Now to get creative

    Hi Nick,
I just treated myself to the same. In fact it just arrived... but a couple of my larger punches have lots of black marks on them. Did yours have this? I don't know if it's 'normal'!
It's a bit worrying considering how much they cost. Thanks, Janie.

Just saw this post is a few years old ...

If they are just superficial stains, you can avoid hassle by using metal polish from a tube. If they are pitted, you should get them replaced. Good luck. Dennis.
