    Art Nouveau, definitely.

I absolutely adore the artwork first and foremost, I love the way everything has a lovely black outline and I always wanted to be able to draw like that but never could.

I once was at an Antiques fair with my parents and was walking around stretching my legs and saw three HUGE Art Nouveau paintings which were about 3' wide by at least 6' tall. They featured three beautiful women with the usual flowing hair and lots of foliage and I fell in love with them... unfortunately they were about £8,000 a piece *ahem*

I bought some Art Nouveau tarot cards instead which are equally beautiful and more in my price range

I find a lot of Art Nouveau a bit pompus and a lot of Art Deco a bit stark so I have to sit on the fence not liking either much to be honest.

There are some bits I like in both camps but on the whole I'm not a fan at all.

    Default Inspirational Tarots

Here are some links to decks I bought just for the artwork:

    The Sylph Tarot

    Gothic Tarot

Maroon Tarot I won these by writing a poem about one of the cards (can't remember which one now)

Deviant Moon (I have a thing about the moon)

I have quite a few more decks (as does Nic, I know). If anybody would like scans for artistic inspiration, just pm me

For me it's Art Nouveau. Just love the curves. I also like a lot of Islamic art, which also uses lovely curves.

I'm with you there....I'd love to go to the Alhambra one day......(sigh!)

Mind you .... I also love Egyptian influences as mentioned above by Lorraine, which was, of course, borrowed in the Art Deco period...so, as you can see I am no purist!!

Having studied the whole question a bit for a presentation I had to give...I discovered that there is a link and progression from Art Nouveau to early Art Deco - where there was still a lot of use of colour and some natural forms. It was the later Art Deco period that nudged into the Moderne that was very geometric with a more restricted and subdued palette....this is the style that is considered more masculine and what used to get the college debates going!!

    (......me?......a stirrer?.......I couldn't possibly comment....!!)
