I have actually got some slate table mats that I am doing the same with, though I wish they were a bit bigger. Never managed to find slate tiles the right texture/shade/size. I am a fussy cow!

Me too - I've just found a piece of limestone slab which I hope I can use for the darker pieces of jewellery, as the slate loses the detail somewhat.

Side light to get detail in slate. Also try spritzing to get little water droplets on surface (if they run off try glycerine0 more surface tension)
I like the bags of nice smooth pebbles for my pics sometimes...
also from DIY stores.
