    Default Help with Soldering Gold Filled/Plated Metal

    Hi,

    Can someone explain to me how this works please? Is it ok to solder and what do I use?

    Thank you

    I would not attempt to solder gold plated items with gold or silver solders as the gold will burn off, as for gold filled or rolled gold as I know it, I would say this is also risky as you have no idea how thick the gold is on the base metal. Some people would use lead or pewter based solder or what are known as soft solders, but I would not recommend using these low heat flowing solders on jewellery.
    If you are making items it is better to make them from a base metal or silver, solder them where needed using silver solders, then get the finished item gold plated.

    Many thanks James - I see now.

    Does anyone know of anywhere I can get a few things gold plated in the Brighton area or nearby? I'm having trouble finding somewhere which isn't just for bulk/industrial.

    I looked online and found these;

    I have only used London companies, which I am sure would do you a postal service if you contacted them and asked. Single items needing gold plating are common in the jewellery trade.
    You can see lists of trade specialist companies here; http://www.thegoldsmiths.co.uk/techn...1&subcat=11322
    This list is under polishers and platers, as most polishing companies also do a plating service.
