polishing wheels and extraction?

How important is it to have decent dust extraction on a bench polishing wheel? I normally use my neighbours, but I really want to get my own sorted but I don't think there will be room for an extractor (especially now I have my durston where I was planning on having my polisher.

I've taken to using platinum blue and white on a small mop (which is amazing stuff!) but it does worn me that in California it is known to be a cancer hazard.

Could I get away with using a dust mask and nowt else?

If you get the Foredom polisher with a dust extractor, it's really tiny and you can move it around. I use Luxi too but from the muck that collects in the filter, I'd say you would't want that floating around your studio.

meh, I was just going to repurpose an old grinder I had. Might have to rethink.

I have managed for the past 25 years with just my homemade mop covers and without an extractor Liz, if things get mucky I just position and old vacuum cleaner near the mops. A regular clean with the vacuum up keeps my polishing area clean. I have an old Black and Decker, Henry type vacuum for this job.

I was going to but George and Caroline tempted me to the foredom side.... the force is strong..... hahaha

It wasn't too hard though, I need my grinder for preparing my gravers etc.

I need to invest in an old vacuum cleaner though those cotton mops get everywhere!

Hi there. I would love a bench polisher but for now use the little mops on the foredom. My problem isn't so much extraction but the state I get in. Being very myopic means i get too close and end up with a black face and my white hair turned pink!! I think I need to run up a 'polishing outfit'. Any ideas? Balaclava perhaps?

Lol, Wallace :-) how about wearing optivisor then you wouldn't need to get so close to the piece with a spinning mop next to it - think about safety, if it gets caught on your hair it will be very painful to say the least.

Wallace, Thank you so much i haven't laughed so much for ages! I was thinking more of a tablecloth with eye holes cut out for safety goggles but a full hazmat would work for so many more things, nipping over the shop incognito....emptying the cat tray...

Lilia, no problem with the hair other than going punk - too short to get caught in anything!!
