cookson scrap pot....

Hi all
i have a scrap pot about 1/3 full i was thinking of
sending it in for funds to buy wire and sheet.
Is this amount going to be worth my while or should
i wait until it is full.that could take some time.

I melt down my own scrap and hammer it out into sheet. I have no rolling mill just a large hammer an anvil and a torch for annealing. It is very satisfying to turn ones own scrap around into useable material. I cannot make wire but I can make rod with one of those little reversible ingot moulds.

As far as I know when selling scrap, they are going to charge you for assay and the price for scrap is less than new material. If you can possibly do it yourself it is a win win situation.

You do not say what is in your scrap pot, but if it's silver then a kilo or more would be worth sending in. Cooksons charge a flat fee for the assay of around £40.

As Kwant has said, you might well decide to recycle it yourself, but I quite like to splash the cash. Dennis.

I generally reckon on a full scrap pot of silver being about a kilo refined. If you want to cash it in sooner, it's often better to use HGPM or Blundells (inter alia)

Does anyone know if you can send fine silver into Cooksons to be scrapped? If so what would be the minimum
amount worth sending?

yes you can.
Again, you're looking at a kilo for it to be worthwhile doing.

The truth is that if it is going to be assayed for silver, you might as well send in a mixed pot: sterling silver, fine silver, lemel and a few silver fish.

I had to look up lemel but silver fish???
