My brother who's a diver suggested getting a 'pony' bottle from a dive shop, but the guy in the local gas place said that wouldn't be good enough because it wasn't pure oxygen.

I'd say no. The concentration looks very low.

And certainly not worth the fiver saving against just getting one from Tuffnells or Off Mandrel.

Not immediately - they'll be either DIN or A clamp, and you'd need a suitable regulator to step down from 230 or so bar. Would they sell them? Depends on their perceived liability exposure.

Sounds like a Flamefast - I've seen them, and they're quite effective. I have one of the larger Flamefasts, which needs a bigger compressor driving it (although it is ported for natural gas, I need to get it changed to use propane).

it's ok, but a bit variable in terms of heat.

I might collar a local guy I know who is not only a welder (he does a lot of industrial art stuff at Glastonbury) but is also a diver.

I also got a oxycon unit from Tuffnells. Works a treat.
