I don't think it's vain at all. I love hallmarks and get the non-compulsory marks on my stuff as well (lion mark and date mark). I do know quite a few jewellers who don't hallmark their items, but they tend to sell privately only so don't see them getting clapped in irons any time soon. The worst thing is the initial set up cost of registration and stamp. if you are sending largish parcels in it's much cheaper. the last lot I sent in of 70 items, I'm sure they didn't charge me for the optional marks.

I don't think it's vain to get your own makers mark. Like others have said it's expensive to set up. I got mine soon after I started making because I got my first private sale but I wanted to have the my own makers mark because I was proud of what I'd made. Even if I don't ever sell a lot of items I like knowing that my mark is out there on a few pieces.

Well, the good news is that I was given enough money for my birthday to get my maker's mark :-)

I'm now the very proud bearer of my maker's mark :-) And when school goes back tomorrow, I shall get busy making stuff to use it on. So excited!

I have had great fun hammering my mark into all sorts of scraps today, and one ended up being turned into a cute little ring :-)

I really like that, and you can give it to your messenger as proof that the message is really from you.
