Default Why are gold prices so weird!

    Hi,

I've just been pricing up some gold for a couple of rings and for exactly the same amount of gold these are the prices:

    9ct white 164.70
    18ct white 455.88
    9ct yellow 161.61
    18ct yellow 392.94

    So here are my questions:

If 18ct gold contains twice as much pure gold as 9ct why is it so much more than twice the price and why is there such a huge difference between 18ct yellow and white but not between 9ct yellow and white?

Only asking because I know my customer is going to query the prices!

    Thanks,

    Rob.

edit I mean weird not wierd but I can't change the posts title!

What are the mixes for the white golds?

Looking at a couple of the alloys on the Cooksons knowledgebase, the 18k NF white uses a lot of palladium (13.9%, 3% silver, copper & zinc), while the yellow HB uses 15.97% silver (and copper). Silver is running at around £0.65/g, palladium £15.70/g... Similarly, several of the 9k whites just use more silver than the yellow equivalent. That's just the materials cost - I've no idea what the fashion charge would be for 9k vs 18k, but that may explain some of the dfferences.

Thanks Peter that seems to make sense,

Yes, Peter is Ace, but some people quite like Tennyson. Sorry I just had a daft moment, Dennis.
