Start with something simple like one layer on top of the other. The main point with a beginners course is to learn the techniques
(just like a beginners jewellery or soldering course )
The teacher will probably have some ideas for you too - enjoy your day

    Dear BLuecat,

It is difficult to advise you what to make without knowing you, but you might go for a pendant or charm, so that you can hang it on a ready-made chain. They sell them cheaply in markets and you will have made your first necklace.

What you make might be a fancy initial, an Egyptian god, a flower, an animal, or something unexpected like a wheelbarrow, or a watering can. You can research these things on line. The main thing is not to go for something naff you see in all the jewellers windows like the outline of a heart. With metal clay the challenge is also to avoid it looking like dough, or plasticine.

The first things I made were a teddy bear with red stones for eyes and three different shoes with stubby heels and straps fastened with coloured stones which give extra glamour and can be inserted before firing.

The point of forums is not just to ask questions so do let us know how you got on, so that we can learn from you experience.

    Kind regards, Dennis.

Thanks, I have done lots of silversmithing but never used the clay before so was really looking for ideas of what is possible. No point in making something I don't want considering how much the clay costs.
Will let you know how it goes.
