    Default How toilets are flushed

    Sometimes, on the forum, we are asked a ‘how to’ question which starts from a completely false premise and it is helpful to spot this, in order to avoid being lead into a realm of fantastical advice.

    Which reminds me of a piece of nonsense I wrote years ago for the Doggerel Club. It is the last day of a long holiday, so before the frivolity dies down here goes:

    When I was very young
    A lady once told me
    That when you pulled the handle
    Or pressed the lever
    This sent a signal
    To a little man inside the cistern
    And he would turn on a tap
    Which flushed the toilet

    In later life I came to realise
    That this could not be true;
    If the little man really turned on the tap
    He would be nearly overwhelmed
    By the sudden rush of water
    And he would have to get out quick
    I was so thick
    To have believed the lady. Happy New Year, Dennis.
